What is Shrimp Louie Salad?

Shrimp Louie is a traditional Californian salad that was invented in San Francisco in the early 1900s. It typically includes bay shrimp, boiled eggs, lettuce and tomato. Shrimp Louie dressing has a taste similar to a thousand island dressing, and typically includes mayonnaise, ketchup, chili sauce, Worcestershire sauce, onions, salt, and pepper.

Another delicious variation on this dish is the Crab Louie salad, which uses all of the same ingredients and dressing, but simply substitutes lump crab meat for the shrimp!

How to Prepare Classic Shrimp Louie Salad

While the full steps are included below, here are some tips to note while preparing this Shrimp Louie salad recipe.

  • First, we will prepare our shrimp for the salad. In a medium bowl, blot your shrimp dry with a paper towel. Toss together the shrimp and Cajun seasoning. Heat a non-stick skillet on medium heat. Once the pan is hot, spray with olive oil spray and sauté the seasoned shrimp until fully cooked. This should only take a few minutes! Remove the shrimp from the skillet and set aside to cool.
  • Chop your veggies, and in a large mixing bowl, toss all of the ingredients except the egg on a bed of crispy lettuce. Add your signature Shrimp Louie dressing and toss again. Scoop to put your salad for each serving in a small bowl and add the eggs to the side. Squeeze some fresh lemon juice from the wedges over each bowl and serve immediately. Enjoy!

The flavors in this salad are what I would describe as a west coast version of a French Niçoise salad. Light and fresh, it is the perfect lunch!

A recipe that does not specify the number of servings is pretty much worthless
