Blood Orange Gin Fizz

·

Cheers to the new year with this fun cocktail! Toast this blood orange gin fizz to the end of 2020, and look ahead to better times in 2021.

Looking back on 2020, it has been one heck of a year!  When Julian and I rang in 2020, we could never have expected how different life would be one year later.  One year ago, we were busy planning a trip to Portugal and other weekend getaways.  We were also extremely busy, with multiple nights a week spent on activities and social events.  Both the travel and the hectic schedules have stopped in 2020.  While I miss certain aspects of these things, I am also grateful to have been able to take this time to slow down and appreciate the small things.

While much has been lost in 2020, there is plenty to look forward to in 2021.  With vaccinations starting, there is hope that will life will become more normal in the coming months.  I have also found that we are closer with our friends and family near and far.  It seems odd, but I have actually found I have spoken with my friends living abroad more now than when I was able to travel and visit them!

So in honor of this New Year's Eve, here is a cocktail that is easy to make with only a few ingredients.  However, it evokes feelings of hope, which is the perfect theme for ringing in this new year!

How to Make a Blood Orange Gin Fizz

While the full recipe instructions are available below, here are some tips to make this cocktail for your new year's celebration tonight!

  • First, squeeze your juice.  I prefer the flavor and color from blood oranges for this cocktail.  However, if you cannot find blood oranges at the store, you can use navel oranges.  I also suggest trying a combination of grapefruit and oranges as a substitute!
  • Next, shake together the gin and orange juice in a shaker.  Then pour it into your glasses.  Top them off with sparkling wine.
  • Finally, I recommend adding garnishes.  While this will not necessarily change the flavor of the drink, it adds to the presentation of the cocktail to make it feel fancier.  I recommend using a thin slice of orange and a sprig of rosemary.  Cheers!
