I remember making my first ever cranberry sauce when I was in kindergarten.  It was a special craft day with leading up to Christmas.  I remember being so proud of the sauce I had made, until I tasted it at turkey dinner.  I did not like cranberries at all!  Since then, I have grown to love cranberry sauce and it is an essential addition to any Christmas turkey dinner.

The cranberry sauce I made in kindergarten was extremely simple and consisted of cranberries, sugar, and water.  While this recipe is also simple, it does include a couple more ingredients than my kindergarten cranberry sauce to add additional flavor.  This is a great recipe because you can make it a day or two in advance of your feast.  This will help to reduce your stress and to-do list on the big day!

How to Make Easy Spiced Cranberry Sauce

While the full recipe details are available below, here are some tips to make the best cranberry sauce to accompany your turkey dinner.

  • Cranberries: be sure to rinse the berries off and to pick any remaining stems off.  This is important because you do not want any stems making their way into the sauce.  They will ruin the consistency of your sauce.
  • Spices: the key spice used in this sauce is cinnamon.  Simply add a cinnamon stick to the mixture as it cooks and remove once the sauce is ready to cool!
  • Citrus: I added navel orange to this cranberry sauce.  Simply slice the orange in half and then cut one slice off of the half.  Add the orange slice and squeeze the orange juice from the remaining halves into the saucepan with the cranberries and cinnamon stick.

Ingredients

  • 340g fresh cranberries (1 bag)
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 stick cinnamon
  • 1 orange, juiced and 1 slice removed
  • optional: water (if you prefer your sauce runnier)

Instructions

  1. In a medium sauce pan, add all the ingredients and heat on medium.  Stir regularly until the cranberries burst and the sauce thickens.
  2. Continue to cook, stirring regularly until it reaches your desired consistency.  Cool to room temperature and serve.
