Baked Cream Cheese Wonton Poppers are the perfect make ahead appetizer for entertaining. You can prepare these the night before or even freeze them, then pop them into the oven right before guests arrive and you have a crowd pleaser ready to go!

One of my favorite dishes at Chinese restaurants is the crispy wontons. I've taken inspiration from this dish to create one of my favorite appetizers! Soft, delicious cream cheese is mixed with green onions and seasoning and wrapped in a smooth wonton wrapper and baked until golden brown. These are also called cream cheese rangoon. The crispy exterior and soft cheesy inside make this a perfect crowd pleaser for a New Year's Eve celebration or for game day!

How Make the Best Baked Cream Cheese Wonton Poppers

Here are some tips to prepare these easy cream cheese wontons as the perfect appetizer for your next party!

  • The first thing we will do is create our filling for the wonton poppers. Mix together the cream cheese, fresh ginger, garlic powder, and green onions using a fork. Sometimes I even use a potato masher to do this part! If you want to take these to the next level, I also recommend adding fresh crab at this step. It adds the most delicious texture to the filling!
  • The next part of our popper prep is the most complicated of the entire process - we need to wrap our wontons! On a clean dry surface, place a wonton wrapper down and roughly a teaspoon of the cream cheese mixture. Dip your finger into the warm water and spread the water along the edges of the wonton wrapper. Quickly dry your fingers off and then squeeze together the edges of the wrapper. Place your wrapped popper onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  • Once you place wontons on the baking sheet and you have finished filling the wrappers with all of your cream cheese filling, spray the poppers with a little bit of vegetable oil, avocado oil, or olive oil. Preheat your oven to four hundred degrees F. Bake for approximately seven minutes, until the wonton wrapper is golden and crispy, and the filling is soft and melty. This is a great appetizer because we bake the poppers instead of using a deep fryer. Another healthy way to prepare these is in an air fryer if you have one!

Make This Appetizer Ahead

One great thing about this recipe for when you are entertaining is that you can prepare it ahead of time to take a lot of work out of your preparations on the day of your party! There are a couple of ways you can prepare your wontons ahead of time. You could put your filling together and then cover it in plastic wrap and refrigerate it until you are ready to stuff and bake your crispy cream cheese wontons.

If you want to prepare these further in advance, and to cut down your prep time you can scoop the cream cheese filling into the center of each wonton wrapper and close them up, and then freeze them. To freeze the wonton poppers so that they do not stick together, place the wrapped wontons in a single layer on a parchment lined baking sheet. Place the sheet with the wontons in the freezer, making sure none of the poppers are touching. Once they are frozen, you can put all of them in a freezer bag and keep frozen until you are ready to cook them. When you want to cook them, simply take them out of the freezer and let them thaw for a few minutes, then spread them on a parchment lined baking sheet, spray with oil and bake in the oven until crispy!
